U.S. stocks fluctuated as investors digested earnings and the end of the most recent trade talks with China. Treasuries rose and the dollar fell ahead of the Federal Reserve’s rate decision.
The S&P 500 struggled for direction as weakness in consumer stocks helped counter tech gains fueled in large part by Apple Inc. after the company lifted its forecast. The end of negotiations between Chinese and American officials without much of a sign of headway also weighed on sentiment, but the two sides did agree to continue discussions.
The dollar weakened against major peers, and yields on 10-year Treasuries traded around 2.04% as markets readied for the Fed’s anticipated rate cut Wednesday.
